JALANG’O, KRISTOFF AND GABU LOCKED UP IN A NIGHTCLUB OVER ALCOHOL BILL

“So Dirunk” is one of the jams that became a national hit. The song, credited to Kristoff, Gabu and featuring Jalas, got massive airplay and got over 700,000 views. But how did it come about?

Jalang’o says it was Kristoff’s idea to shoot in a club before things went south, “Most people don’t know that when celebs are recording music videos, you’re not supposed to open or drink because there are several takes and sometimes, they’re even filled with water and not booze. More like props. We went to a certain club in Rongai and Kristoff is the one who came up with the idea.”

Jalas adds that the drinks they were given we ‘rent props and the video vixens weren’t briefed, “So we’re there with Kristoff and some video vixens but they were not briefed. And the club owners put real drinks instead of using props. When they said action, there was a lot of expensive booze on the table and we were just getting drunk.”

Things took a turn when they couldn’t pay the bills, “We were locked in the club till 6am and we were told to contribute and pay for the booze. I only had two lines in the song, the first one and the last one. When the bill came, I was shocked because it was actually the real thing. And thank God that they opened the booze because we would have pretended to be drunk and the video and my lines wouldn’t have worked.”

Jalas adds that they tried to talk their way out of the situation, “Kristoff and Gabu went to talk to the club managers. And the video vixens were like, ‘Oh my God, I thought these guys were celebrities and they’re arguing about Sh10,000. Will they even pay us?’ It was crazy but we managed and came up with a hit song.”
