Lupita Nyong’o is mourning the death of renowned actress Cicely Tyson. The Academy Award winner shared a touching story of one of her memories of the veteran actress.

They say never meet your heroes. But I am beyond grateful to have met Ms. Cicely Tyson and to have been blessed by her warm embrace and her gentle and firm mentorship. Ms. Tyson was a woman unapologetic about who she was. Her talent, her integrity, her face, her hair were all inspirations for me growing up.

And when I got the chance, I loved being in her company. I leaned in when she spoke in that soft, yet strong voice. She made me gasp in awe and admiration, and she made me laugh out loud. I will carry her memory and the advice she whispered in my ears for the rest of my life. We may have lost a library but we cherish the books. #RIP #CicelyTyson.”

December last year, the actress promoted Cicely’s book on her social media page, “I can’t wait to read the incomparable Cicely Tyson’s new book, #JustAsIAm, which details her storied six-decade career on and off the screen. Without the gains of women like her, women like me would have much greater pains to bear in the arts. Pre-order wherever books are sold, or pick up a copy on January 26! #EternallyGrateful

Cicely Tyson died on January 28 at 96 years old. “I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” the actress’s manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement.
