LUPITA NYONG’O STUNS AT MET GALA 2025 WITH LITTLE RICHARD INSPIRED FASHION LOOK

Academy Award-winning actress and fashion icon Lupita Nyong’o commanded attention with a breathtaking ensemble honouring Little Richard, the flamboyant architect of rock ‘n’ roll.

Embracing the gala’s theme Tailored for You inspired by The Costume Institute’s exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, Nyong’o celebrated Black dandyism as an act of defiant self-expression. “I let it all hang out. Every bit: the love, the gentleness, the tenderness, the kindness,” Nyong’o proclaimed, quoting Little Richard. “You ain’t supposed to hide nothin’. You have it, God gave it, show it to the world!”

Nyong’o revealed that the legendary performer who inspired icons from Prince to Billy Porter was her muse: “I was excited to pay homage to the history of Black fashion at this year’s Met Gala. For me, this year’s theme captured how the Black men of America have insisted on their dignity through dressing with more value than this country has afforded them. Dressing as a radical, defiant, and self-preserving act is something that I learned from my African roots as well as from observing African-America through popular culture.”

Collaborating with Chanel and her creative team, Nyong’o’s look fused opulence with rebellion, “I stand on the shoulders of the legacy of bold Black artists like Little Richard, and I was honoured to pay homage to them with Chanel and my incredible team of creatives.”
