Nana Gecaga Talks About 27-Year Journey to Sobriety
Former CEO of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nana Gecaga, is celebrating 27 years of sobriety.
Marking the occasion on July 4, 2026, Ms. Gecaga took to social media to share an emotional reflection on her journey, “27 years. One day at a time. 🤍 Today July 4th 2026 marks 27 years of sobriety. 🙏✨ It wasn’t always one day at a time. Some days it was one hour. Some days it was one minute. But every step mattered. 💪🤍,” she wrote.
She, a member of Kenya’s prestigious Kenyatta family, has been open about her past struggles with alcoholism, which began during her university years in the United States. In a previous candid interview with Pinky Ghelani, she described hitting rock bottom as a young adult.
“It started off as being social, I became the life of the party… My day would start at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I would crawl to my fridge and have a beer, then drink another one, go to the shower then have another, get ready, have another and of course I was 21 in the land of the free so I would go to the bar and continue to drink,” she recounted.
She recalled a particularly low moment upon returning to Kenya, where her father had to retrieve her from the baggage carousel after she failed to pick her language due to intoxication. “When I arrived here, my dad had to come to the baggage carousel because I was the only one left there just watching my bags going round and round, while the whole flight had left.”
Following multiple family interventions, she made the life-changing decision to enter a rehabilitation center for one month, a choice that ultimately saved her life.
Now, 27 years later, Ms. Gecaga says recovery is not a destination but a daily commitment. “Recovery isn’t a finish line, it’s a choice I continue to make every single day, and I never take it for granted. 🌱 If you’re struggling today, please don’t give up. You don’t have to have all the answers. Just get through this moment… then the next. ❤️ And remember: asking for help isn’t weakness, it’s one of the bravest things you’ll ever do. 🫶,” she shared.
She dedicated her milestone to her family and friends, “To my family and friends, thank you for believing in me, standing by me, and loving me through it all. This milestone belongs to you too. 🥹❤️”
She offered words of solidarity to others on the recovery path, “To everyone fighting their own battle: keep going. One day at a time. You’ve got this. 🤍✨ Congratulations to me… and to everyone choosing recovery, one day at a time.”
