Legendary deejay Peter Chuani also known ad DJ Pinye  has shared the emotional origin story of his rise to fame, crediting media personality Maina Kageni with an act of kindness that changed his life forever.

In a social media post, DJ Pinye opened up about his humble beginnings as a young DJ in the UK, spinning tracks at small house parties where sometimes only five people would show up. The turning point came in 1992 when a friend informed him that Maina Kageni, then living in Finchley, London, was throwing a birthday party and needed a DJ.

I knocked on the door, introduced myself, and offered to DJ. Maina looked at me and said, ‘I don’t have money to pay a DJ.’ I replied, ‘I’m not charging.’ He gave me the funniest look… then said, ‘Okay,’” DJ Pinye recounted.

That single “Okay” proved to be the catalyst for his legendary career. The birthday party was the biggest crowd DJ Pinye had ever played for, and the attendees a community of UK-based Kenyans became his first real supporters. They famously rallied behind him at a DJ competition he ultimately lost, making so much noise in his favour that he still landed the gig.

That crowd became my first real supporters. They came to cheer me at the DJ competition I lost… but somehow still got the job because they made so much noise for me. They were the same UK Kenyans who came home every summer and packed JKays, helping launch my career,” he shared.

The story comes full circle with an incredible coincidence. DJ Pinye was back in London in June 2026, almost exactly 34 years later, during the same week as that fateful birthday party.

DJ Pinye credits Kageni with changing how he listens to music. “After spending time with you, I learned to listen to music differently. You taught me to hear the background vocals, the little details most people miss. I still listen that way today,” he said. He added, “Sometimes the biggest turning points in our lives begin with someone simply saying, ‘Okay.’ My brother… thank you for unknowingly changing my life.”
