A dramatic and unprecedented confrontation unfolded within Parliament on Tuesday, April 8, when two female legislators engaged in a heated physical altercation, drawing widespread attention.

The incident involved Hon. Umulkheir Harun, a nominated Member of Parliament under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and Hon. Falhada Iman, a representative in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Videos circulating online captured the two leaders exchanging harsh words before the argument escalated into a physical scuffle, prompting intervention from fellow lawmakers and security personnel.

In an official statement, Hon. Umulkheir expressed her regret over the incident, “Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds, a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother. My colleague from the EALA, who has expressed longstanding differences with my work, acted in a manner that I find unacceptable. She came to Parliament to do nothing but attack me an incident that blindsided me and left me questioning the motive behind the ambush.”

She further emphasised her commitment to upholding decorum, stating, “I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasize that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct. While I am not providing further comments at this time, I remain fully committed to upholding the respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and of myself, particularly as a Muslim woman.”

Hon. Harun also addressed the implications of the altercation, adding, “The political landscape is inherently challenging, but there is never justification for behavior that undermines the integrity of our work. I hope that together we can foster a more respectful and constructive environment moving forward.”

She confirmed that she has formally reported the assault to the relevant authorities for further action.
