WAKADINALI RULE KENYAN HIP-HOP AS TOP ARTISTES WITH OVER 46 MILLION STREAMS

Ten years ago, Octopizzo dropped Long Distance Paper Chaser (LDPC), a game-changing album that helped shape the future of Kenyan hip-hop. Fast forward to 2025, and the genre isn’t just alive; it’s thriving, with streams skyrocketing, new voices emerging, and fans from Nairobi to Nanyuki vibing to the beat.

Kenyan hip-hop has exploded on Spotify, with streams jumping from 170 million in 2022 to over 430 million in 2024 that’s a 152 percent increase in just two years! And who’s leading this revolution? Gen Z. A whopping 61 percent of streams come from 18- to 24-year-olds, proving that hip-hop is the sound of Kenya’s youth.

But it’s not just the guys tuning in female listeners now make up 27 percent of Kenyan hip-hop streams up from single digits, showing that the genre is breaking stereotypes and connecting with everyone.

Gone are the days when Kenyan hip-hop was just a Nairobi thing. While the capital still leads with 94 million streams in 2024, cities like Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Thika are all in the mix. Even smaller towns like Nyeri, Murang’a and Nanyuki are rocking to the beats, proving that hip-hop has gone nationwide.

Right now, Wakadinali are the kings of the scene, with 46 million lifetime streams on Spotify. Their raw, unapologetic Sheng drill sound has made them the voice of the streets, with hits like Hizi Stance, Sikutambui and Kichwa Mbaya dominating playlists.

But they’re not alone Nyashinski (28M streams), Octopizzo (23M streams), and Khaligraph Jones continue to hold it down, while rising stars like Toxic Lyrikali whose track Chinje blew up with zero industry backing are proving that talent and hustle speak louder than big budgets. From underground anthems to mainstream bangers, the culture is growing, evolving, and taking over. And with new artists dropping fire every day, one thing’s clear: Kenyan hip-hop is here to stay.
