DIANA MARUA FACES BACKLASH FOR SAMPLING E-SIR’S SONG SAREE
The highly anticipated return to music by content creator and singer Diana Marua, known as Diana B, has been met with backlash and a wave of criticism from Kenyan fans and music lovers online.
The controversy stems from her new song, Bibi ya Tajiri, which samples the iconic 2002 hit Saree by the late legendary rapper E-Sir. Marua announced the song’s release on her YouTube channel, stating, “Diana B is back!!! After a 2 year music break Diana B drops another banger #bibiyatajiri.” However, the reception quickly shifted from anticipation to dismay as listeners recognised the unmistakable beat and hook from Saree.
The online reaction has been negative, with many Kenyans expressing that the sample is disrespectful to the legacy of E-Sir, an artist widely revered as one of Kenya’s greatest musical talents who tragically passed away in 2003.
Social media comments reflect a sense of protectiveness over E-Sir’s work. Activist Hanifa questioned, “Seriously how can we sue Diana Bahati for using E-sir’s name and beats like that? Absolutely diabolical.” Meanwhile, George T. Diano commented, “They have diminished E-sir’s legacy in a manner that is both deeply disrespectful and profoundly absurd maan!”
The criticism has extended beyond the artistic use of the sample to questions about the legal and ethical clearance process. User Droid asked, “How did Ogopa DJs clear Esir’s song for this garbage?” Many comments highlighted a palpable sense of personal hurt and disappointment. DJ Krowbar simply stated, “Nooooo, That Esir sample broke my heart to pieces,” while Ciku Yegon declared, “E Sir didn’t die for this ….we are unlocking new levels of disrespect and blasphemy!!!!”
Marua and her management have not publicly responded to the growing criticism.
