SENATE DISMISSES CLAIMS OF BILL SEEKING TO EXTEND PRESIDENT, GOVERNORS & MPS TERM LIMITS
The Senate has dismissed claims that a proposed constitutional amendment seeks to extend the terms limit of the President, MPs, and MCAs from five to seven years.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Senate labeled the information as false online reports, “Nowhere in the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, is there any proposal to extend the terms of office for the President, Governors, MPs, or MCAs,” the statement read.
The Senate stated this misinformation is not supported by the actual contents of the Bill. It rubbished speculation that the Bill aims to create the office of the Prime Minister.
According to the Senate, the Bill’s objective is to strengthen devolution and enhance the role of the Senate itself. The Bill also proposes establishing a County Assembly Fund to guarantee financial independence for county legislatures.
