Charlene Ruto, daughter of the President Ruto, recently attended the Apimondia International Apicultural Congress, representing a new generation within the global beekeeping community.

Reflecting on the experience, Charlene shared, “The International Meeting of Beekeepers was one for the books! As a newbie in the Apimondia Congress, it was my distinct honour to be amongst the young people representing the beekeeping value chain to attend, participate and engage for impact and influence!”

She described the event as a sensory and inspirational journey, stating, “The innovations, creativity and honey tasting tingled my senses and took me back to the first time I opened a hive and fell in love with bees.”

A key outcome of the congress was a step forward for African beekeepers. With the support of Apimondia President, Dr. Jeff Pettis, the continent’s stakeholders held their inaugural strategic meeting to chart a 25-year vision. “We African beekeepers held our inaugural 25-year strategic meeting led by our Regional Commissioner for Africa, David Mukomana to decide on the Africa we want as beekeepers and stakeholders in the beekeeping and honey value chains,” Ms. Ruto announced.

This landmark meeting unified effort to shape a sustainable future for apiculture across Africa. “The future is bright and buzzing for young people in the apiculture sector!”
