The Kenyan media fraternity is in mourning following the death of former journalist Kimani Mbugua. The 29-year-old, who was known for his work as a presenter at NTV and Citizen TV, tragically died by suicide on October 14, 2025.

His death follows a public struggle with his mental health. In recent months, Mbugua had been open about his challenges with bipolar disorder, a condition that had required him to seek treatment at various rehabilitation facilities.

I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of Kimani Mbugua at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. It is believed that he may have taken his own life. I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out.

In the meantime I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani’s family, friends and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time. May God rest his soul in  eternal peace,” said Mike Sonko.

Mbugua’s media career began at a young age; he joined the Nation Media Group as a presenter at just 19 years old, working on Nation FM and NTV before later moving to Citizen TV as a television presenter.
