KENYA’S JOSHUA WERU SIGNS WITH NFL’S PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Joshua Weru, a former player for Kenya’s national rugby 15s team, the Kenya Simbas, has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL)

His move to American football came after he went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The draft, held on Saturday, saw teams pick a limited number of college players across several rounds. The Eagles selected eight players during the event, but Weru was not among those chosen. Instead, he became available as an undrafted free agent.

According to reports, Weru was subsequently picked up by the Eagles through the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program. This initiative is designed to bring athletes from outside the United States into American football, allowing them to train with professional teams while developing their skills.

NFL Africa celebrated the milestone, calling it “a dream come true” for Weru. As part of the Eagles, he will join fellow IPP alumnus Uar Bernard of Nigeria. Weru is currently the only Kenyan player in the NFL, potentially paving the way for future athletes from the country.
