KENYA SHINES AT AFRICAN PARA-TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH MULTIPLE GOLD MEDALS

Kenya concluded its run at the 3rd Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Para-Track African Championships, which ended on 11 May at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria, finishing third overall behind Nigeria in first place and Egypt in second place.

The team secured multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals across various categories, Anthony Mugwanja and Njaga Gathura delivered outstanding performances in the men’s B category, grabbing gold in the individual pursuit before going on to secure their second medal of the championships. Their victories set the tone for a strong Kenyan showing on the velodrome.

Another gold medal came from Samuel Mwangi, who triumphed in the men’s 200 meters C3 sprint as well as the individual pursuit in the men’s C3 category, demonstrating exceptional speed and endurance.

In the women’s categories, Ann Nekesa and Julia Miringu won bronze in the individual pursuit in the women’s B category before adding another bronze in the tandem sprint, also in the women’s B category.

The pair later added a silver medal to cap a strong campaign for Team Kenya. Visually impaired Kenyan cyclist Felistus Kaveva delivered a remarkable performance in the B category, winning three silver medals in the pursuit, sprint, and time trial events. She was narrowly edged out across all three races by Nigeria’s Favour Omo Ojiaebu, who proved to be a formidable competitor on home soil.

Overall, Team Kenya finished the championships with a total of nine medals, including three gold and three bronze from the first two days of competition, followed by additional silver and bronze medals in subsequent events. Team Nigeria topped the medal standings with 16 medals, consisting of nine gold, five silver, and two bronze. Egypt finished second with 14 medals, while Kenya secured third place overall.

The championships also served as a qualification and ranking event for both the Commonwealth Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
