The Nairobi County Assembly has approved the construction of a monument in honour of late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, following an amendment to the initial proposal.

The motion, originally tabled by Nairobi West Member of County Assembly John Rex Omolleh, had sought to locate the monument at Uhuru Park. However, a subsequent memorandum submitted to the Clerk of the County Assembly proposed a change of venue, with the new site being the Supreme Court roundabout in the city centre.

According to the motion, the memorial is designed to celebrate Odinga’s extensive contributions to Kenya’s development and progress. Legislators highlighted his lifelong dedication to strengthening governance structures, broadening democratic freedoms, entrenching the rule of law, and advancing infrastructure projects across the country.

The County Assembly further noted that the monument would stand as symbol of what it described as Odinga’s “selfless sacrifice” in championing these ideals throughout his adult life.

Odinga, passed away on October 15, 2025. He was given a full State funeral and laid to rest on October 19, 2025, at his family home in Bondo, Siaya County.
