‘You Can Barely Survive’ Kate Actress Reveals Kenyan Actors are Poorly Paid

Actor Kate Actress has opened up about the harsh realities facing actors in the country, revealing that many are struggling to make ends meet despite years of experience in the industry.

Speaking about the challenges of the entertainment sector, Kate disclosed that actors are often poorly compensated, with some earning as little as Sh60,000 per month for demanding schedules that include long hours, night shoots, and early morning call times. “You leave home at 5am and you also have night shoots. The actress, who has been in the industry for 15 years, explained that while established actors are often in high demand due to their experience and audience appeal, the financial rewards do not match the effort required. “When you go and pitch for a show, the network asks for a certain actor because you have experience and sometimes numbers,” she noted. “But as a producer, you have to balance with new actors.”

Kate revealed that she has turned to content creation as an alternative source of income, describing it as a “life saver.” “I looked at content creation and acting and I weighed – why would I be on set seven days a week to be paid Sh60,000 per month?” she asked. “Content creation saved my life, and that is a fact.“

She urged fellow actors to pivot and explore other opportunities, including digital content creation, to supplement their earnings and achieve financial stability.

The actress also pointed to the lack of proper acting schools in Kenya compared to other African entertainment hubs like South Africa and Nigeria. “South Africa and Nigeria have proper acting schools, Kenyan actors have to learn on the job, and we are the best. But you are barely surviving.“
