TRUPHENA MUTHONI BREAKS NEW WORLD RECORD, HUGS 1,234 TREES IN ONE HOUR
Kenyan environmental advocate Truphena Muthoni has set a new world record after hugging 1,234 trees in just one hour at the Jardim Botânico of Brasília, smashing the previous record of 1,123 trees.
The Kenya Embassy in Brazil proudly announced the achievement, celebrating Muthoni’s historic feat as a moment of national pride for Kenya. “Our target was 1,172 trees. We reached 1,234 in just one hour,” Muthoni said following the record-breaking attempt. “But this was never only about numbers. It was about memory, reconnection, and roots finding each other again.“
Muthoni, who holds the Head of State Commendation (HSC), described the experience as deeply personal and symbolic. She noted that the Jardim Botânico became more than a venue it served as a meeting point between Afro-Indigenous Brazil and the African diaspora. “After decades apart, Afro-Indigenous Brazil and the African diaspora met again through the forest, an old connection remembered, a living bond restored,” she added.
Muthoni used the platform to deliver a message about forest conservation and Indigenous rights. “I’m not just a record holder. I’m a voice for forests and Indigenous communities,” she stated. “A forest is more than trees. It is memory, medicine, and home. Indigenous forests are not empty land. They carry generations of wisdom. Protecting forests is protecting culture, memory, and life itself.“
The Kenya Embassy in Brazil congratulated Muthoni in an official statement, writing: “Kenya Embassy represents! Truphena Muthoni HSC breaks record, congratulations.“
