The United Green Movement (UGM) has officially responded to sexual harassment accusations made by Shakira Wafula, a former staffer on David Maraga’s campaign

In a June 3 statement, the party defended its actions and rejected claims that Maraga, the former Chief Justice, ignored women’s concerns. Wafula publicly shared her allegations after Maraga attended an End Femicide rally on June 1 in Nairobi. She expressed distress, stating that seeing someone who once had a duty to protect women but allegedly failed was deeply painful.

She later criticised his presence at the event as performative and insensitive, given how her harassment complaints were reportedly mishandled. According to Wafula, she resigned from the campaign in November 2025 due to a clash in core values, but later revealed the real reason: poor handling of harassment claims against two senior officials. She described a pattern of gaslighting, marginalisation of complainants, and an internal process that left the accused largely unscathed.

She claimed the campaign had no formal reporting system, safe contact person, or written protocol for misconduct. UGM, however, presented a different timeline. It stated that on October 11, 2025, Wafula and two others raised oral allegations in a virtual meeting. A follow-up was scheduled for October 16, where legal options were discussed, and complainants were asked to submit written statements but they did not.

After meeting Maraga on October 22, a joint written complaint was finally submitted on November 3. A Committee was formed, and a hearing was set for November 26. Wafula resigned on November 17 and refused to attend the hearing, later stating she had lost interest. The committee found no evidence.

UGM insisted the allegations were not against Maraga personally, and that he did not interfere with the process. It accused Wafula of defamation and opportunism, saying that true accountability follows due process, not social media theatrics.
