Despite high hopes and widespread acclaim, Ugandan political documentary titled Bobi Wine: The People’s President fell short of clinching an Oscar at the prestigious Academy Awards held in Los Angeles.

The coveted award went to the Ukrainian documentary, 20 Days in Mariupol. Directed by Mstyslav Chernov, the documentary gives a harrowing first-person account of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Bobi Wine’s documentary was nominated under the Best Documentary Feature alongside The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, To Kill a Tiger and 20 Says in Mariupol.

The singer was accompanied by his son and wife Barbie Kyagulanyi  at the award ceremony, “From Kampala to the #Oscarscarpet! Learn the stories behind the clothing worn by #BobiWineThePeoplesPresidentprotagonists @bobiwine and @barbiekyagulanyi, designed and made by Seguya Alawi from the ghettos of Kamwokya Kampala and Anita Beryl Asasira from Kabalagala Kampala,” he wrote on Instagram

The feature was produced and directed by Christopher Sharp and award winning producer John Battsek. The documentary depicts Wine as the Ugandan opposition leader, former member of parliament, activist and national  musician who risks his life to fight Yoweri Museveni’s regime.
