‘MY CAREER COST ME MY MARRIAGE’ DIANA OPOTI OPENS UP
Renowned fashion curator Diana Opoti has bravely shared her journey of recovery after a challenging period in her life.
In a candid post, Diana revealed the personal struggles she faced over the past three years, including the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, the loss of her marriage, and her battle with depression.
“In the last three years, I’ve felt that I lost myself. Moreover, a career that defined me (fashion) didn’t turn out as I expected. Covid rocked things, and alcohol became a crutch to cope with how wildly things changed,” she recounted.
Diana also spoke about the sacrifices she made in pursuit of her career, which came at a significant personal cost. “Everything I’d wanted so badly, the career I’d pursued, cost me my marriage to a wonderful, loving man. Other career relationships I held onto affirmed me, and friends who extended me any level of grace, I will forever be grateful.”
The fashion maven revealed that the weight of these losses led her into depression, “With that loss, I sunk into depression. I have friends who challenged me about ‘not being okay’ because I looked okay, but in my private space, I was very, very lost.”
She spoke about the importance of seeking help and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, stating, “Just because you function, ‘greatly even,’ doesn’t mean you don’t need help!! Listening. Learning. Growing. I am happier today…happy is such an underrated word. But it’s literally how you feel when you are on the path of recovery. I am happy today.”
