IAN WAFULA LEAVES BBC AFTER TWO YEARS AS AFRICA SECURITY CORRESPONDENT
Renowned journalist Ian Wafula has announced his decision to transition to freelance work after nearly two years as the BBC Africa Security Correspondent.
Wafula, who has been based in Nairobi, announced the news on his social media platforms, “After nearly 2 years as BBC Africa Security Correspondent, I’m going freelance. Covering conflicts like Sudan, Mozambique, and DRC was tough, but sharing the stories of those impacted was fulfilling. In need of expert media skills and analysis? Let’s collaborate,” Wafula wrote.
His journey with the BBC began in October 2023 when he announced his appointment as the Africa Security Correspondent. At the time, he shared his excitement about the role, stating, “I am now the Africa Security Correspondent for the BBC based in Nairobi. Looking forward to covering the continent and learning from its complex security nuances. Special thanks to my friends & family for being my constant cheerleaders. As well as my editors Juliet Njeri, Vera Kwakofi, and Newton Ndebu for believing in me. Let’s go!”
In addition to his professional achievements, Wafula recently celebrated a significant personal milestone. On July 20, 2023, he graduated with a Master’s degree in International Journalism from Cardiff University, a feat he proudly POSTEDon social media. “We did it! Just bagged my MA in International Journalism from @cardiffuni! Thanks so much @cheveningfcdo for believing in me. And to my lovely family,” he posted.
