MUSALIA MUDAVADI CONFIRMS BONIFACE MWANGI IS DETAINED IN TANZANIA AMID MISSING REPORTS
The Kenyan government has verified that prominent activist Boniface Mwangi is currently detained by Tanzanian authorities. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi disclosed that the Kenyan High Commission in Dar es Salaam is engaged in efforts to facilitate Mwangi’s release and safe return.
During a May 20 interview with Citizen TV, Mudavadi stated, “Boniface Mwangi is in Tanzania and is being held by the authorities. We hope he will be released and helped to return home.”
The Foreign Affairs Minister noted that Tanzanian officials have not clarified the grounds for Mwangi’s arrest or the recent deportations of multiple Kenyan citizens. He speculated, “I think the individuals who visited Tanzania seem to have rattled the administration there during this heightened and emotive electoral process.”
Mwangi had traveled to Dar es Salaam to observe the treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Before his arrest on May 19, the activist raised alarms about his safety, reporting that armed men had encircled his room at Serena Hotel.
