‘I WAS MADE IN KENYA’ BEBE COOL REVEALS SURPRISING MUSICAL JOURNEY IN NAIROBI
Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has talked about his formative years in Kenya, crediting the country for shaping his music.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Buzz Central’s Cheptoek Boyo, when asked about his Kenyan connection, the reggae-dancehall pioneer revealed, “I always tell my Ugandan people that I am hard and I’m not breakable easily because I was made in Kenya. You can’t break me in Uganda if I was made in Kenya.“
Bebe Cool traced his journey to a fateful 1990s concert in Uganda featuring Kenyan artist Hardstone, “It all began at a concert in Uganda where Richard Kaweesa, came and performed alongside Kenya’s Hardstone, they were featuring Buju Banton. I spoke Hardstone and he was the hardest dude I ever met in the music industry at that time. I was encouraged by Hardstone, I decided when I get done with my education, I’m going to Kenya to pursue my music.”
The artist explained why Kenya became his sanctuary, “In Uganda, parents didn’t believe music was a career. Our audience’s mindset towards reggae/dancehall and dreadlocks made it taboo. But Kenya? Young ladies wore dreadlocks to offices! Kenya was more exposed, it became my creative promised land.”
