Former Kiss 100 presenter Walter Mong’are, popularly known as Nyambane, has publicly recounted the details of a defamation lawsuit that resulted in him and his then co-host, Caroline Mutoko, being ordered to pay Sh21 million to prominent politician Martha Karua.

In a recent interview, Nyambane clarified his personal role in the on-air incident that led to the legal battle. He recalled that while his co-host, Caroline Mutoko, was “very, very upset” with Karua during the broadcast, he himself never uttered any defamatory statements against the politician.

I never said anything against her. I never uttered anything that would be injurious to her,” Nyambane stated. “I was trying to tell Caroline, ‘let’s go easy on this.’ But the next thing, you have a lawsuit against you, and the judgment has been made, and you have to pay Sh21 million for that.”

He said that they were sued as individuals, not just as employees of the radio station. “The radio station was enjoined, but Caroline and I, we were in the docks, and I’m wondering, what am I doing here?” he recounted. The settlement was recovered from their salaries by the station’s management, led at the time by Patrick Quarcoo.

Reflecting on the experience, Nyambane framed it as an act of professional solidarity. “But we… that’s what it means to take a shot for your partner,” he remarked.

When asked about his current relationship with Karua, Nyambane revealed that they have since moved past the incident. “Yeah, when we meet we speak about the country and leadership. We partner where we need to partner,” he said, noting that the lawsuit is not a topic of discussion between them, though he humorously added, “she might remember that there was a balance somewhere.”
