NAIROBI TOPS NEW HIV INFECTIONS WITH YOUTHS AGED 15-34 ACCOUNTING FOR MOST CASES
Data from Kenya’s National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) shows that Nairobi has recorded the highest number of new HIV infections within the last year.
According to the latest Kenya HIV Estimates report, Nairobi recorded 3,045 new HIV cases in 2024, representing the highest nationally. This reflects a concerning 19% increase in new infections across the country over the past year, rising from 16,752 to 19,991 cases.
Ten counties Nairobi, Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Busia, Siaya, Kakamega, Nakuru, Mombasa and Bungoma were responsible for approximately 60% of all new HIV infections last year. Following Nairobi, Migori County reported 1,572 new infections, with Kisumu documenting 1,341 cases.
Nationally, HIV prevalence in 2024 was 3.0%, with a notable gender disparity: prevalence among females was 4.0%, double the 2.0% recorded among males. The report also noted a rise in HIV-related deaths, which reached 21,007 in 2024 up from 18,473 the previous year. Health Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga stressed that these figures highlight the urgent need for early testing, consistent treatment.
Youth remain the most affected demographic, with individuals aged 15–34 accounting for the majority of new cases. As of 2024, an estimated 1,326,336 Kenyans were living with HIV, including 62,798 children.
