‘I USED TO SIT IN THE HOUSE AND CRY’ KING KALALA ON BATTLING DEPRESSION

Radio personality Prudence Chepkirui popularly known as King Kalala is opening up about his mental health journey.

Speaking in an interview with Oga Obinna, King Kalala spoke candidly about her experience battling depression, “There are those moments as a creative you feel you need to be further but life is a journey. Sometime this year I did not post for 5 weeks, I had a content block, I felt I was behind in life and all my contracts had ended. I was like where was I going to get money? I was depressed, I used to sit in the house and cry. It got to the point where I never went to work for a month.”

Adding, “There was no one to talk to. Once you are Kalala you don’t know who wants to be your friend and who likes the idea of being your friend. I was telling God to remove me from that space. I wouldn’t wish depression on anyone. It’s wild. It’s your mind bullying you. I have been there and it’s a very dark place.”

Kalala said a friend helped her to get through the dark place, “A friend who is older than me came to see me and I told him what was happening and he encouraged me and told me I was not alone, after that I was okay. I went to Uganda to a new environment and new space for a month and it was such a healthy experience.”
