LARRY MADOWO ADVOCATES FOR THE DECOLONISATION OF WHITE NAMES IN MT. KENYA

By  |

Journalist and media personality Larry Madowo, has called for the decolonisation of white names in the Mount Kenya National Park.

In a social media post on October 7 while visiting the park, Madowo said the popular spots named after whites should be reclaimed by the locals and renamed by Kikuyu, Meru and Embu people.

Why is this lake called Michaelson inside Mt Kenya? Isn’t it time to decolonize these names, or reclaim them? Delamere Peak, Krapf, Thomson, Macmillan, Lake Ellis, Mackinders Camp. What did the Kikuyu, Meru & Embu people call these places before the white man?” A concerned Madowo wrote.

Madowo and his friends took five days to summit Mount Kenya, “I tricked 5 friends into joining me to summit Mt Kenya – Africa’s second-highest peak. Then I caught a cold on my way back from New York. It was too late to cancel. We bantered, bickered and danced through 5 days and 4 camps until we made it! I’m a little mad that it was only 4,985m (16,355 ft) above sea level so I’m rounding it off to 5K. The great James Kagambi @kg_mountain_exp and his team of 22 guides, porters, cooks and trail magicians took amazing care of us.

This was the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done and this was the best crew to do it with. Some people think I just flew to the peak so here’s 8 minutes of receipts. Our route: Chogoria Gate to Special Camp, Lake Ellis via Nithi Falls, Lake Michaelson, Simba Tarn and Point Lenana.”
