KENYA’S ERIC WAINAINA AND MELISSA KARIUKI NAMED RECORDING ACADEMY MEMBERS
Kenya’s music scene is making global waves once again as celebrated artist Eric Wainaina and music executive Melissa Kariuki have joined the Recording Academy’s 2025 new member class.
This prestigious appointment grants them voting rights for the Grammy Awards and a platform to advocate for the global music industry.
Eric a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter shared his excitement on social media, “Hello Earthlings, I’m honoured to join the @RecordingAcademy’s 2025 New Member Class an inspiring global community of creators shaping music’s future. As a member, I now have a voice in the Grammy Awards process and a platform to advocate for our industry, support peers, and grow in my journey.”

Wainaina, known for hits like Daima and Nchi Ya Kitu Kidogo also talked about the importance of diversity in music, “What makes the Academy strong is its diversity of genres, experiences, and voices. I’m excited to contribute my perspective and champion musical excellence worldwide. In other words, put some respek on my name! #IAmTheAcademy”
Melissa the founder of Whip Music, a leading music marketing and distribution company, reflected on her journey, “When I was in university, I organized open mics, fashion shows, and art festivals just passion and curiosity. I never imagined it would lead me to start @whipmusic_ and work with artists worldwide. Today, I’m celebrating a milestone university me couldn’t have dreamed of: joining the Recording Academy.”
Kariuki, who has spearheaded hundreds of music campaigns, added, “I’m thrilled to officially be a member. This is a platform to advocate for creators’ rights and shape music’s future. #WomenInMusic #Grammys”
