VICTOR WANYAMA TO LAUNCH FOOTBALL ACADEMY

Just days after announcing his retirement from professional football, Kenyan footballer Victor Wanyama has set his sights on the future, not his own, but the next generation of champions.

The former Harambee Stars captain has officially announced the imminent launch of Wanyama Academy Nairobi, a grassroots-to-elite football development academy aimed at nurturing young talent and instilling discipline both on and off the pitch.

The announcement comes on the heels of Wanyama’s emotional retirement statement on April 3, 2026, in which he reflected on a career that spanned four countries, six clubs. “A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch,” Wanyama said at the time.

Now, that same boy is giving back. “Something special is coming. ⚽🔥 Wanyama Academy Nairobi is almost here, a new home for young talent, discipline, growth, and future champions. Stay tuned. The journey begins soon,” he said.

The academy will focus on technical development, physical conditioning, mental resilience, and character building, with a special emphasis on identifying raw talent from underserved communities echoing Wanyama’s own journey from the streets of Muthurwa to the stadiums of Europe’s elite.

He also confirmed that he is currently pursuing his UEFA A License, which he expects to complete this year. This coaching qualification will allow him to take a hands-on role at the academy, personally shaping the next generation of Kenyan footballers.

Wanyama retired as arguably the most successful Kenyan footballer of all time. His career highlights include: Becoming the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League for Celtic FC. Playing in the English Premier League for Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. Captaining Harambee Stars to their first Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2019.
