SENATOR KAREN NYAMU EXPLAINS SIGNIFICANCE OF NYAKINYUA CORONATION

Senator Karen Nyamu made an appearance at the Senate recently, dressed in full traditional cultural regalia, and took the opportunity to explain the meaning behind her recent coronation as a Nyakinyua.

The senator reflected on the overwhelming attention her coronation has received. “For the past three days, it has been fascinating to watch everyone suddenly become an expert on culture bloggers, personal profiles, even the news,” she wrote. “You guys made me the talk of the town. I’ve trended before, but to see my event trend like this, that can only be favour.”

Nyamu disclosed that her journey to becoming a Nyakinyua was not taken lightly. She underwent teachings and rigorous preparation prior to the installation. She further noted that many observers had noticed a positive transformation in her even before the ihetĩ (cultural elders entrusted with the rites) had completed their work.

She also weighed in on a growing trend among young Kikuyu men in leadership positions who prematurely adopt mburi cia athuri, roles reserved for elders. She explained that traditionally, the title of Nyakinyua is not something one is installed into; rather, it comes naturally with age and the progression of life stages.

However, she clarified that when the honour is bestowed earlier before the appropriate age and before a son has undergone his own rites, installation becomes necessary. This, she said, is often due to exceptional responsibility and leadership roles. She cited herself and Kirinyaga Woman Representative Sabina Chege as prime examples of such early installation.

Nyamu urged Kenyans to channel the same energy and enthusiasm for cultural heritage beyond a single trending event. “Let us keep that same enthusiasm for our culture, not just because of one event but for posterity and to keep the culture alive,” she said.
