Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, has passed away following a prolonged fight against cancer. Reports confirmed on Tuesday evening that the award-winning movie star died at the age of 40.
His death has sent shockwaves through social media and plunged the Nigerian entertainment industry into profound grief. For months, fans had noticed his absence from public life. His last post on social media was in late 2024, which prompted concern and prayers from his many followers. Although close friends had earlier tried to ease public worry.
Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, he studied Law at the University of Calabar and also earned a diploma in Mass Communication. He first gained national recognition as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant. That achievement paved the way for a thriving acting career that spanned more than ten years.

Ekubo became a well-known name thanks to his versatility on screen, often portraying charming, witty, and elegant characters. His role in the 2012 film In the Cupboard won him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards. He remained a regular feature in major productions and was admired for his dedication and sharp fashion sense.
His personal life frequently drew public attention, particularly his long-term relationship with American-born model Fancy Acholonu. The couple was considered one of the industry’s most high-profile pairs. In May 2021, Ekubo proposed, and they began planning a lavish wedding under the hashtag #FalexxForever, scheduled for November that year. However, Acholonu unexpectedly ended the engagement just three months before the ceremony, saying she needed to follow her own truth.
The situation grew more complicated in late 2022 and early 2023, when Acholonu made several public remarks about a lack of physical intimacy during their five years together. Despite the public fallout, many fans continued to hope for a reconciliation. Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues in the film industry.
