MP Millie Odhiambo Explains Why She Embraces the ‘Bad Girl’ Label
Suba North Member of Parliament, Hon. Millie Odhiambo, has shared the inspiration behind her now-famous “Bad Girl Millie” name, revealing it as a deliberate rejection of societal conditioning that often confines women to passive roles.
In a recent interview, the MP explained that the nickname is not a celebration of misconduct but a statement against the traditional expectations placed on girls from birth. She noted that while being raised to be “good” is not inherently negative, it often comes with invisible shackles that stifle ambition and authentic expression.
“We are raised as girls to be good… but when you grow older, you discover that being good limits. Being good means don’t speak when you need to speak. Being good means don’t challenge when you need to challenge. Being good means rise, but only to a given level.”
She famously declared that “good girls never get the corner office,” emphasising that one must embrace their “bad” side to reach their fullest potential.
Odhiambo noted that it is an ingrained trait taught to girls from a young age. She described the typical conditioning of being told to be “sweet,” “lovely,” “demure,” and not to raise one’s voice.
She argued that the real challenge in womanhood is unlearning these limitations and discerning which aspects of the “good girl” to retain and where to let the “bad girl” take charge. “Being good means rise, but only to a given level. I’m not good, I’m bad. I want to rise as high as I can. I want to be the best I can be, and I can’t be that being good,” she affirmed.
