Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has issued a statement urging the public to respect her uncle, veteran broadcaster Fred Machoka, following a brief incident at his 50th anniversary celebration over the weekend.

The event, dubbed the Machoka @50 Grand Concert, was held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi to honour Machoka’s five decades in broadcasting.

In footage circulating online, Machoka is seen addressing Orwoba directly before ordering security to escort her off the stage. The incident occurred after Orwoba was heard chanting “Wantam” during the proceedings. Addressing his niece, the broadcaster stated that he would not allow her actions to jeopardise his career.

“Please, Security, toa huyu msichana hapa. You cannot screw up my job. Next time you are with your uncle, utajua hapa huna neno, utatii,” Machoka is heard saying in the video.

As security moved to remove her, attendees at the concert were heard describing the moment as a “family beef.” In response, Orwoba took to social media to defend her uncle, saying that he deserves respect despite their differing political views.

“Leave my Uncle alone! He is a legend and he has achieved what very few people on this planet can. Because of this, he is allowed to deal with me whichever way he wants,” she stated. “So please, those abusing him, respect is paramount. Everyone is allowed to have their political stand, even Uncle Fred.”

Machoka and Gloria Orwoba are related through Orwoba’s mother, who is Machoka’s sister. The Machoka @50 Grand Concert was a landmark celebration featuring an impressive lineup of Kenyan and international performers. The event showcased Congolese rhumba legend Koffi Olomide, Congolese singer Mbilia Bel, Cameroonian musician Sam Fan Thomas, Alicious Theluji, Les Wanyika, and the Kenyan group Them Mushrooms.
