Foreign Nationals Leave South Africa Ahead of June 30 Deadline
Fears of xenophobic attacks are driving immigrants to leave South Africa before June 30 deadline set by anti-migrant groups.
While authorities have vowed to intervene against any violence, community tensions are running high. Anti-foreigner sentiment has escalated over recent months, with protests erupting in several cities. These rallies have turned deadly on occasion, resulting in fatalities since April. Many migrants claim they have received explicit warnings and are departing out of panic.
President Ramaphosa has issued a last-minute plea for peaceful protests, warning citizens against issuing threats or ultimatums. He has also defended the rights of legal residents, pointing out that they are protected by the constitution and play a vital role in society. In his view, protest does not grant license for intimidation or destruction of property.
“They work, study, raise families, invest in our economy and contribute positively to our society. They too are entitled to the protection of our laws and our Constitution. The right to protest and freedom of expression does not allow people to threaten or intimidate others, or to engage in acts of vandalism or violence,” he said.
