BONIFACE MWANGI REUNITED WITH FAMILY AFTER DETENTION IN TANZANIA, NARRATES TRAUMATIC ORDEAL
Kenyan activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi has been reunited with his family following his detention and alleged torture in Tanzania.
Mwangi, who was arrested while attending a court hearing in solidarity with Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, has broken his silence on the traumatic experience. In an emotional statement, Mwangi said the whereabouts of fellow activist, Agather Atuhaire remain unknown.
“We went through the worst form of torture and were threatened with public humiliation if we revealed what they did to us,” Mwangi disclosed. “You cannot torture us and then dictate how we should react. We were detained, tortured, and treated worse than rabid dogs all in the name of President Suluhu.“
Mwangi and Atuhaire had traveled to Dar es Salaam on May 19, 2025, to attend a court hearing for Chadema’s Tundu Lissu before planning to proceed to Uganda for Kizza Besigye’s case the following day.
“We were there peacefully as members of the East African Community to attend a court hearing in solidarity with Chadema’s party leader, Tundu Lissu. I have been to both Tanzania and Uganda to visit comrades in jail in the past. When the then Chadema’s Freeman Mbowe was in jail in the same Tanzania, l visited him. When Dr. Stella Nyanzi was jailed in Uganda, I went to see her. And when Bobi Wine was under house arrest, l went to visit him, too.“
