JOURNALIST KIMANI MBUGUA LAID TO REST IN MURANG’A
The late journalist Kimani Mbugua was today laid to rest at his family home in Maragua, Murang’a County, in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and colleagues from the media industry.
The final journey marked a somber end to the life of a talented individual who bravely shared his mental health journey with the public. Mbugua, who rose to prominence as a reporter for both Citizen TV and NTV, was remembered for his professional work and his later courage in openly discussing his diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had previously assisted Mbugua said, “The Kimani Mbugua’s final journey to his resting place has started. After today we will never see him again. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Sonko stated.

The journalist’s passing occurred under tragic circumstances. After receiving support from well-wishers, Mbugua had been receiving treatment at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. He was discharged in December 2024 after a six-month program. Tragically, on a day that was meant to symbolise a new beginning, Mbugua was found deceased in his room at the facility. While the exact circumstances are under investigation, initial reports suggest he may have taken his own life.
In a statement, Sonko shared his condolence , saying, “I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua… I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani’s family, friends and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time.“
