Popular Kenyan artist Charisma has announced that he turned down a formal offer from a government agency to perform at the upcoming Jamhuri Day celebrations.

The artist said that sharing the stage with the current administration would contradict his core beliefs and be perceived as an endorsement of a government he opposes.

The artist revealed that he received the invitation a week ago but did not hesitate to refuse it.  “They wanted me to perform on Jamhuri Day because they know a lot of us can be bent. For me, I was like, these people have the audacity to pick up the phone to call me, and they know what I stand for and everything, Charisma stated.

To perform on Jamhuri Day is an endorsement in some way, like me saying I have no problem with him. I don’t think it’s something you will ever see me doing.”

Charisma linked his refusal to his political convictions stating his objective to oppose President William Ruto’s administration. He said that support for a leader becomes problematic when it is “to the detriment of other people.”

My agenda is to decampaign Ruto at every chance I get. You can support someone, but when it is to the detriment of other people, that’s a problem.”
