South Sudan Embassy in Nairobi Closed Over Unpaid Rent

The South Sudanese diplomatic mission in Nairobi has been temporarily closed following reports that the government had fallen approximately four months behind on rental payments, disrupting essential consular services for South Sudanese nationals living in Kenya.

The embassy, situated in the upscale Kilimani area of the capital, was shuttered on Tuesday, August 11, according to a staff member at the mission who spoke to Radio Tamazuj. The precise amount owed to the landlord remains unclear at the time of this report.

A source within the embassy indicated that the premises would remain locked until authorities in Juba intervene to settle the outstanding debt. The closure has already begun to affect South Sudanese citizens seeking assistance, with one individual reporting that he was denied entry by security personnel when he arrived to process travel documents.

In November 2025, the same mission reportedly experienced a similar shutdown over rent arrears before operations eventually resumed. Earlier this year, there were reports that Senior Presidential Envoy for Special Programmes, Adut Salva Kiir, had covered three months’ rent for the facility.

Civil society leader Edmund Yakani condemned the situation, describing it as detrimental to South Sudan’s reputation and diplomatic standing. He called on the government to prioritise funding for its overseas missions to prevent further embarrassment.
