‘I Walked Away Because of Domestic Violence’ Mercy Makini on Marriage to Morara Kebaso

Mercy Makini Morara, wife of lawyer and activist Morara Kebaso, has publicly addressed years of what she describes as domestic violence, stating that she left her marriage to preserve her life and peace.

In a detailed statement, Makini said she walked away from the marriage due to domestic violence, including incidents in which she was physically assaulted while pregnant. “I first walked away because of domestic violence. The society only appreciates a woman when they walk out of a marriage dead, I chose to walk out alive,” she said.

Makini stated that she left the matrimonial home on 2nd March 2026 and has never looked back. “You know very well what happened, including the times you physically assaulted me while I was expectant. I eventually said enough was enough, walked away, and chose to rebuild my life in peace.“

She accused Kebaso of repeatedly pulling her into his public affairs despite claiming he does not want their issues on social media. “You have constantly dragged me into your affairs, even after repeatedly saying you don’t want our issues on social media. Yet you continue to provoke and mention me. Enough is enough.”

She also dismissed any suggestion that she remains part of his life under a polygamous arrangement. “As for this talk about polygamy, please stop creating the impression that I am still part of your life. Polygamy is your business, not mine. I left. I moved on. I am living my life.“

Addressing an ongoing legal dispute, Makini clarified that she was sued by Kebaso and only responded. “Should I address the court case? Not now. But for the record, you are the one who sued me. I only responded. I have the documents to prove it should that conversation ever become necessary.”

Makini said she had remained quiet for seven years in the hope of peace, but the disrespect continued. “I have been the quiet one for a long time because I wanted to keep private matters private. But you have chosen to bring the whole world into this, and I will no longer allow you to continuously play the victim while dragging my name into your narrative.”

She added, “I kept quiet for seven years, hoping for peace, but the disrespect never stopped. I will no longer choose silence. Because the more I keep quiet, the louder the disrespect becomes.“

She concluded by urging Kebaso to clear his name without involving hers. “Clean your name without dragging mine into it. I have moved on, and I intend to keep it that way.”
