MIKE SONKO DENIES ABANDONING CONJESTINA, BLAMES FAMILY FOR RELAPSE
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has broken his silence following a viral video showing retired boxing champion Conjestina Achieng begging on the streets.
Sonko denied allegations that he has abandoned the former athlete, “I am not giving Conjestina any attention right now. Her family is the problem.” According to Sonko, Conjestina’s aunty and son removed her from his care and discharged her from a rehabilitation facility without his knowledge in December 2025.
He claims she was still on medication at the time of her discharge. “We cannot work that way,” Sonko said. “There are other philanthropists, Eric Omondi, Oga Obinna, and Siaya Governor James Orengo they can chip in. But you will have the same family problem.“
Sonko detailed his history of supporting the boxing legend, stating he cared for her for two years during which she was stable and doing well. “We stayed with her well, but the moment she goes home, everything is destroyed,” he explained. “Enough is enough. We cannot keep working like this, and it cannot be about Conjestina all the time.”
The former governor alleged that the family took Conjestina from rehab against medical advice. “Her son and aunty came for her in December 2025 and discharged her while she was still on medication. For two years, with her, she was okay. But the moment she goes home, you see her on the streets of Yala.“
Sonko also disclosed the financial burden of ongoing mental health care, stating: “I have spent a lot of money buying drugs for mental issues which are very expensive.”
