Kenya Repatriates 86 Nationals from South Africa Amid Anti-Immigrant Protests
The Kenyan government has repatriated 86 citizens from South Africa following demonstrations targeting foreign residents, according to Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu.
The first cohort of 26 returnees arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday, where PS Njogu confirmed that emergency protocols were activated as soon as authorities received alerts regarding the deteriorating security situation. She emphasised that the escalating hostility had created a climate of fear, prompting many Kenyans to flee their homes and seek sanctuary at the High Commission in Pretoria.
“Our team at the Kenya High Commission is extending services to them and offering sanctuary and shelter. We are coordinating with the South African government to ensure the safety of Kenyans who have sought shelter there and to ensure they move safely to the airport before evacuation,” Njogu stated. Njogu stated during the reception of the evacuees.
Officials report that over 200 individuals remain temporarily housed at the diplomatic mission in Pretoria, with further flights being arranged for those awaiting relocation. This operation coincides with a surge in anti-foreigner sentiment across South Africa, which has historically led to the displacement and economic targeting of immigrant communities.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has issued a security advisory, urging Kenyans still in the region to maintain close contact with embassy staff and adhere to local curfews or safety directives.
